Why Is My Teenage Daughter So Moody? The Chemistry Behind the Door Slam

One of the most common questions mums of teen girls ask the internet is some version of "why is my daughter so moody?" Usually typed at night, usually after a door slam, usually with a side of "and what did I do?" Here's the answer nobody gives you at the school gate: mostly, it's chemistry. And chemistry has a schedule.

Her brain and her hormones are both under construction

The teenage brain is being renovated while she's living in it. The emotional centre is running hot, while the part that manages impulses and perspective is the last to finish. Layer puberty hormones over that, newly arrived and still finding their rhythm, and you get a girl who feels everything at full volume with half the soundproofing.

The week that explains a lot

If your daughter has her period, watch the calendar. In the week before her period, her hormones dip, and mood often dips with them. The tears over nothing, the snapping, the "I'm FINE" that clearly isn't: that week, it's not drama, it's chemistry, and it happens to up to 3 in 4 of us. Once you spot the pattern, everything changes. You stop taking Tuesday personally.

Is it normal for her to be moody all the time?

Moodiness that comes and goes, even daily, is normal teenage weather. There's no magic age where it's worst, but the early teen years, when the hormones are newest and the friendships are fiercest, tend to be the stormiest. It genuinely does settle as her cycle finds its rhythm and her brain finishes the renovation.

When it's more than moodiness

If the low mood stops lifting, if she's withdrawn from everything she loves for weeks, if her eating or sleeping changes dramatically, that's not a phase to wait out. A GP is the right first stop, and going with her is one of the most loving things you can do.

What helps in the meantime

Name the week without weaponising it. Don't take the bait when she's spiky. Offer comfort without commentary: the snack, the heat pack, the quiet company. Let her retreat, but make sure the retreat has care in it. That's the thinking behind every Gurl Code box: her period essentials plus self-care chosen for exactly the week everything gets louder, delivered every month, so being looked after arrives on schedule even when the mood does too.
